TYPES OF ASPHALT

BASE

A course surface with 2" stones in the mixture. Applied over stone Life expectancy is only 5-10 years before needing a top layer applied.

ID3

A slightly less coarse surface with a mixture of 2" and smaller stones sizing creating a variegated surface. Applied over stone. Life expectancy applied alone is 10-15 years before needing a top layer applied.

TOP

A fine finish with a smoother surface. Top can be applied only over a layer of asphalt such as base, ID3 or existing asphalt surface as an "overlay" (A new layer is applied over top of an existing layer of asphalt.) Life expectancy of a two layer "base and top" for a new driveway or overlay is 15-20 years before needing a new top layer applied.

Things to keep in mind

Asphalt takes 6-12 months to cure, with in this time it is susceptible to power steering marks to appear while driving on it.

Hot asphalt can burn feet or paws. 77 degrees outside can be up to 125 asphalt temperature.
